Inflammation Is Quite Literally Killing You

Disclaimer: This post barely scratches the surface on this topic, it is just a brief, simplified explanation of my understanding of it.

On my list of things I’m really effing glad I know about, this topic is up there. I’ve had to do a lot of research on it as part of my job and it blew my mind how serious it was. I have always been interested in health and wellness but had never heard much about it – INFLAMMATION.

I was doing some cryotherapy today and it got me thinking. Whenever I’ve seen people trying out cryo on Instagram, they always talk about the beauty related, anti aging or energizing benefits of it: increased metabolic rate, increase endorphins, boosts the immune system, increase collagen production, muscle recovery.

But, rarely do I ever see anyone talk about LITERALLY the most important benefit of cryo – its ability to reduce INFLAMMATION in the body.

What exactly is inflammation? And, how is it killing you?

Well, if you want to get technical, it is your body’s natural reparative process that occurs when white blood cells protect the body from foreign invaders like bacteria or viruses. Basically, it is your body responding to stress from your diet, lifestyle or environment. It is natural and healthy to have some level of inflammation in your body to stay healthy, aka acute inflammation. For example, when you work out, inflammation natural occurs to repair your muscles.

This is the “good” kind of inflammation that goes away when its job is done.

The problem is when we eat crap we shouldn’t eat, don’t let our body properly recover after working out and don’t manage our gut health – the body is tricked into triggering an excess of inflammation in our body. When your body experiences constant inflammation you age faster, hold onto stubborn excess weight AND are at a higher risk for diseases like arthritis, heart disease and cancer.

This is the “bad” kind of inflammation, the kind that quite literally kills you.

If you are lactose intolerant and eat dairy every day, not only do you have a stomachache, but your body thinks something is wrong and triggers constant inflammation in your body. In other words, the sharp cheddar or spinach artichoke dip that I have a tough time resisting is slowly killing me…

An imbalance of bacteria and fungi in your gut causes inflammation, which is why I take a probiotic every day.

Stress causes an increase in the level of cortisol in your body, which causes inflammation. So, chill the eff out a bit – all the more reason to take a nice bubble bath or do some meditation.

That diet coke your addicted to, sitting at your desk all day, not sleeping, eating too much sugar, and constant dehydration all increase inflammation in your body.

So, if you’re like me, and want to still be able to jog up a flight of stairs and get hit on when you’re 90 years old:

MORE sleep, MORE water, LESS of these foods and MORE of these anti-inflammatory foods, and TAKE a probiotic.
